john, thanks for your patience and your help. purged ppp-2.3.5 and downgraded to ppp-2.2.0f...so i'm once again happily SLiRPing along. i had tried just downgrading without purging the newer version but got the same behavior from 2.2 as 2.3 as long as 2.3 was on the system.
