I finally got zgv working, I had to edit the /etc/vga/vgalib.config file to increase my monitors horizontal and vertical rates, commented out the section for the mach32 setting, and forced it to detect my card as VGA (was detecting it as TVGA which my card isn't, htough it is a Trident)
