Well, the only idea I have is "try the debian version": get the
sources (.dsc, .tar.gz, .diff.gz) from any debian source mirror,
and run
dpkg-source -x libreadline*.dsc
cd libreadline-*
dpkg-buildpackage -uc -us
(or, change that last step to "./debian/rules build" if all you want
is build it. But apparently you don't, as you also did a "make isntall")
