It might be a region code thing; some DVD drives let you change it a certain number of times before it locks in place. I'd say mplayer knows how to do this, while the kernel does not. RANT: The whole CSS/region-coding fiasco is more proof that letting greedy business people, marketroids or lawyers near any sort of technological development is a sure-fire way to ruin a cool idea (and, incidentally, further damage society in the quest for another buck). -rob
