I had a similar sort of problem on a Windows box a while back. I think it 
turned out that the MTU setting on the router was smaller than in Windows, 
which I think was causing packets to be truncated. Making the router match 
the computers fixed problems with Outlook Express and a internet photo 
service application.

Don't know how you figure out the MTU setting for your ethernet controller 
under Linux, but maybe you could try experimenting with the MTU setting on 
the router to see if that improves things. MTU is set on the WAN setup page 
(got a DI 604 too, wonderful little box).

I just tried explicitely to set passive with a normal ftp session - then
it hangs/times out again. I guess it might be related to my router
(D-Link DI604).
I've set up 'virtual servers' to allow ftp and ssh to a box behind the
router. I've opened for ftp on port 21 - is the port number changed when
entering passive mode?
