stopping xserver from loading

Is there a way to stop the system from loading before getting to windows and getting just the command prompt to come.  I screwed up xserver, and now it freezes when it loads.  I need to stop the system before it loads.  I don't think I am using the right terminology on my search for it because I am not finding anything relevent.  Thanks
