thre is nv and nvidia... 

nvidia is needed if you want 3D support

the above NVIDIA installer sucks ... it doesnt know how to get
rid of the old nvidia files

you have to manually clean it up 
        - if you use the *.run pkg to create the nvidia drivers,
        it'd probably be todays date
 
        - check and move all the old nvidia drivers aside

        find /lib /usr -name \*nvidia\* -ls

and you might need to fix glut, dri, drm, ..  too
