Personally, I think that a program should either be a package MANAGER (dselect, aptitude, synaptic, etc) OR a package TOOL (apt), but NOT both. Leave the downloading and installing bits to apt and friends, and leave the package browsing, etc, to the managers (dselect, etc). I personally use wajig exclusively and am perfectly happy with it.
