Try creating/editing ~/.xinitrc; here's mine for a sample:
#sawfish #icewm #gnome-session startkde #flwm #blackbox #fvwm95 #larswm #galeon #fvwm95 #xterm #twm #wmaker #xfwm
All you need is the appropriate line for your desired wm/environment.
