I agree here. When I build a kernel I:
install kernel
reboot off new kernel
log in a root
cd /usr/src/NVidia/nvidia*glx*<latest>
make install
cd /usr/src/NVidia/nvidia*kernel*<latest>
make install
and it's good to go. That simple
