A mi me parece que uno de los dos Kernels no soporta el ratón...
Compruebalo.

He probado ha hacer dpkg-reconfigure xfree... Pero la cosa sigue sin ir...
El fichero de configuración de las X que funciona en el kernel 2.2.20 es

Como podéis ver estoy tirando del driver VESA (en el kernel 2.2 no
tengo puestos los de nvidia).
Personalmente me lío un poco con el tema de los refrescos de pantalla
(vamos, que no se muy bien como va en el fichero, no hago más que probar
valores).
