Retried, this time using cfdisk, and once I figured out the correct argument for the disk name, it worked fine. Followed the rest of the HOWTO to get the base system setup, and then used dpkg get/set selections from another testing system to download rest of the packages. Everything went smoothly. My only suggeston would be to add the argument for the correct disk to parition when using the cfdisk method in the HOWTO.
