The eclib failure on amd64 is pretty annoying -- I tried on my amd64 box, and got illegal instruction too. Then I compiled libntl27 from apt-get source and installed the obtained libntl27 package, and ran make check again : gone!
It turns out compiling upstream ntl 9.9.1 tries to use "-march=native" by default, which is very bad because it gives too cpu-specific packages. Mattia Rizzolo sponsored a 9.9.1-3 packages fixing this problem, so deps failing on amd64 should be re-scheduled.
I don't know what is amiss with the package yet -- and even more worrying: I don't know how I didn't detect the matter when I checked the deps!
Well, I checked on a box compatible with the build box... and this morning, I checked again on a box not compatible with the build box. That was one of those cases where you have a good chance to get through without seeing something is amiss :-(
I'll try to find more about it as soon as possible,
Done. Sorry for the inconvenience, Snark on #debian-science
