Not only is cmake not "unusable or mostly so", the package *is actively used* by 16 source packages that use it for building -- including cdrkit. Apparently, the most serious bug cited in cmake 2.4.4 is an incompatibility with *Windows* which has no direct relevance to what Debian ships.
