[snipping a lot about wm selection] Is it possible that this is being overanalyzed? What if we just choose a default by fiat (falling back to whatever happens to be installed, in no particular order) and print a message about how to change it? Then recommend gdm or wdm or some other display manager that lets you choose a window manager on login?
