For lighting, I maintain the ola packages, for "open lighting architecture". It is originally meant for controlling stage lighting through the DMX protocol, but it now supports many more protocols too, including some popular SPI protocols that are used on LED strips, and a number of other things that might be useful for home lighting (for mood lighting, etc). There are various APIs available for ola, including a RESTful one, that allow you to, say, change lighting based on some programmed input. They maintain a list of the hardware they support at https://www.openlighting.org/ola/ The software also comes with a browser-based UI to manually control lighting; I added a screenshot of that to screenshots.debian.net; or you can load the "dummy" testing plugin and play with it on your laptop to see what it can do.
