If the his e-mails in the past are still relevant, Ben is against having CONFIG_PREEMPT enabled (for powerpc, at least). So, I don't have it enabled in my kernels for my iBook G3 (well, in fact, I'm momentarily not using Linux right now on my iBook G3).
