*might* be a bug in the control.c file in the alsa sources. Not being sure.. And this: Oct 13 2004: " The version of ALSA in the kernel is often out of date so there will continue to be a point to installing alsa-modules packages even on systems with 2.6 kernels. When an alsa-modules package is installed, the module loader should be so configured that it prefers the drivers from alsa-modules over those from the kernel." see <http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=261618> > alsactl: set_controls:986: snd_ctl_open error: No such file or > directory'. > done. > Setting default volumes... > > =============================================================================== > > Now ALSA is ready to use. > For adjustment of volumes, use your favorite mixer. > > Have a lot of fun! [ ... ] Tentatively: I'd check the sound status with the output (if any) of these 4 commands: cat /proc/asound/version lsmod depmod -a modprobe --verbose --debug snd-card-0 (before the last command: grep -irs snd-card /etc/ to make sure the system knows about snd-card-<whatever>) HTH Best Regards Wolfgang -- Wolfgang Pfeiffer gpg ID: 0AA7E825 Profile, links: http://profiles.yahoo.com/wolfgangpfeiffer
