Ah. OK then. In that case my problem is that the display dies at some stage during the process of starting X. I get the same result by commenting out the BusID line altogether or by using the example XF86Config-4 from: http://mij.oltrelinux.com/ibook/step_step/#xfree Following execution of the startx command the screen goes blank (as expected), gives a momentary flick of light (as expected) and then reverts to blankness. My network is up and running. I have tried both 'startx' and 'startxfce4'. A ps -ax executed via an ssh session now gives: 532 tty1 S+ 0:00 /bin/sh /usr/bin/X11/startx 543 tty1 S+ 0:00 xinit /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc -- /usr/X11R6/ 544 ? R< 0:43 /usr/bin/X11/X -dpi 100 -nolisten tcp I have put the resulting X log files at: http://www.soton.ac.uk/~ajl199/xlogs/ The machine is an ibook G3 900 and its graphics card according to lspci is: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500] Any ideas? Many thanks again, Adrian. *******
