X does not want to play. I have been fighting this for days and getting
nowhere. If anyone can help I would be most grateful.

The first thing to mention is that under OSX the machine had been persuaded to
do dual head as detailed by: http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html .
Having been unable to get X up and running, however, I have reset this in an
attempt to ease things along.

lspci gives: 00:10:0 VGA Compatible Controller: ATI Technologies....

So in the XF86Config-4 file I set PCI to 00:10:0, and implement the other
apparently sensible settings. An attempt to startx then throws up at the end of
the log file:
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 00:10:0
(WW) RADEON: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0:16:0)
found
        (EE) No devices detected.

        Fatal server error:
        no screens found

Where the heck's 0:16:0 coming from? Well, it occurred to me that it might just
be the other output so I changed XF86Config-4 accordingly and this time got no
errors in the log files but, after a quick flick of the display and a gurgle
from the HDD, a blank black screen instead of any form of X. I tried again with
the system plugged in to an external monitor but this did not show anything
either.

Am I just being stupid here and is there a simple solution? I hope so because
otherwise I will be forced to switch back to OSX again.

Thanks in advance,

Adrian.
