Um, unless you explicitly use update-rc.d to change the runlevels that
GDM/XDM/KDM/whatever is started and stopped in, it's started by default
in all multi-user runlevels on Debian (that's 2, 3, 4 and 5). Only Red
Hat (and SuSE, and Mandrake, and other RH-derived distros) follow in
that tradition - and that's because they actually run the display
manager through an inittab entry.
