/dev/pmu (by devfsd or plain old /dev directory) may be present regardless
of kernel pmu support. But you should have seen an error before setting
the O_NONBLOCK flag, upon opening the file, if there wasn't PMU support in
the kernel.

Anything else running that might already have /dev/pmu open?
