Hi,
on the new powerbook the hdd is connected to the secondary master.
Can you switch to the console (ALT+F2) and enter fdisk -l /dev/hdc
The debian-installer searches for a hdd on /dev/hda only!
So you need to partition the disk and create the file-systems manually.
