I think it is an aty128fb problem. When I startx, then I don't get Gnome or GDM loading (I tried by disabling gdm and simply doing startx - so I made sure that I was correctly getting virtual consoles too :). At this point, I can move the mouse X cursor, and that's all I get. Then if I do a ctrl-alt-fn-F1, I can't move the X cursor anymore (so it's switched to vt1? ), and if I do ctrl-alt-fn-F7, I can't do anything either. At this point the only thing I can do is hard reboot the machine... Hmm...
