[...] The hardware, and the kernel, is what's in common between all the various problems you're having. The kernel itself is pretty rock solid, for many people on this hardware. I think the first thing to look at is RAM. Do you have more than one memory chip? If so, take one out to see if it makes a difference. It sounds like the bad blocks test is an ideal one to try.
