I don't use a display manager.. I login at the prompt and then use startx..
when I start KDE, it shows me the splash screen and hangs at the "initializing
system services" stage... when I look at the .xsession-errors this is what it
has:

DCOPClient::attachInternal. Attach failed Could not open network socket
DCOPClient::attachInternal. Attach failed Could not open network socket
DCOPClient::attachInternal. Attach failed Could not open network socket
DCOPClient::attachInternal. Attach failed Could not open network socket
DCOPServer up and running.

The funny thing is that when I start kde as root, everything works fine.. so
some permission somewhere is not right I guess.. please let me know if you have
any suggestions...

Thanks,
