David, if you'd like me to send you this network-install-working version for you to try, let me know.
To follow up, the new-powerpc flavor appears to have worked, and I have a brand new, functioning Debian install :)
You'll probably be seeing more messages from me in the future, the first of which will be "Why is my X-server broken?" :) (I think I answered some questions wrong during the install...)
