For newWorld Macs, and in particular G4s, you will be much happier with the soon-to-be-released new-powermac flavor. It incorporates the 2.4 kernel, which supports G4 hardware much better. Of course, since you already have an install, you could just substitute a newer kernel from a powerpc source. A recent 2.4.18 kernel is available in the Debian archives.
