desktop newbie

I'm generally familiar with Linux, but until now I haven't tried using 
it as a desktop OS.

I just tried installing the official powerpc potato ISOs on my G4.  Two 
things I've immediately noticed not working are sound, and video 
acceleration.  Where can I start in trying to get these things to work?
