I guess the debian stock kernels don't work? It would certainly be easier to find a powerpc than to build a cross-compiler... If you don't mind helping me get up to speed a little bit (I've done some building, but not a kernel yet), and you think a kernel compiled on an iMac would probably work, I could help you out with my machine. FWIW, the 'Note' error reminds me that ybin/yaboot adds a bogus 'Note' to keep CHRP machines happy.
