Well, first of all, let me say that the noises the HD is producing are similar to the noises produced by a Desktop HD when its head is jumping in non-sequential reads. I find it quite strange that it is so noisy, because my other notebook, a Compaq Armada V300, has a quite silent HD compared to the iBook's. But then, the technology of them are quite different, since the iBook has a 20GB HD and the Compaq has a 4.3GB HD. Anyway, the noise occur during any disk activity, but during sequential reads it is bearable. I'm using ext2, but it made similar noises when I had MacOS X installed. In your case, I guess that it would help if you mounted your HD with the noatime option (if you don't need the atime being updated at every file access). Thank you *very* much for your feedback. I'm almost desperate now with this thing... :-( []s, Roger... -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Rogério Brito - [EMAIL PROTECTED] - http://www.ime.usp.br/~rbrito/ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
