If you tell debconf to move the existing config file out of the way, it is backed up in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.debconf-backup. If you tell debconf not to move the existing config file out of the way, your config file is not touched, and no further debconf questions were asked. If you weren't asked about moving your config file, it means the one you have in comprehensible by debconf. Just read /var/lib/dpkg/info/xserver-xfree86.config and all will be clear. -- G.
