Hello Michel,
I shortly solved the problem. The problem was that i didn't ran the
right framebuffer (video=ofonly instead of video=aty128fb)
Now i can set also 24bpp. Before this change the xserver didn't start up
for other depths than 8bpp.
Thanx ofr your help,
Daniel

I have a PowerBook G4 and can't get my XFree86 to work. I was trying a

work with 8bit color over the framebuffer device.
I recently helped a friend set Debian up on such a machine, and we got
it to work with the fbdev driver. Now I doubt we'd have settled for
depth 8, so have you tried all depth/bpp combinations, in particular
depth 24, fbbpp 24?
Or 'i can only get it to work with 8bit color' do you mean the X server
doesn't start for other depths? In that case I'd suspect you're running
OFfb, try radeonfb.
