I recently helped a friend set Debian up on such a machine, and we got it to work with the fbdev driver. Now I doubt we'd have settled for depth 8, so have you tried all depth/bpp combinations, in particular depth 24, fbbpp 24? Or 'i can only get it to work with 8bit color' do you mean the X server doesn't start for other depths?
