This is a tardy followup to my own post to answer a couple of points
that other people have already answered, and to thank those people who
are actually fixing the problem - my hat goes off to you.

It does matter if you are forced to reboot by a Kernel panic in
mac-fdisk after you have overwritten the partition with your old
kernel on and before you've downloaded a new kernel to boot with at
the next restart.

This has been covered pretty comprehensively in the thread. I was
using the "current" woody debian-ppc distribution at 8/Nov/01.
