Check the file /var/log/xdm.log for more information. Also, try stopping xdm (as root, "/etc/init.d/xdm stop") and then running startx from your regular account. If that fails also, try replacing your .xsession with something ridiculously simple (e.g. just run an xterm, no window manager).
