ext3 is not in the 'official' kernel's though, is there a reason for it ? 
Is it political, does it still need testing, or are there some issues yet ?

and BTW, having the /var/lib/dpkg/status file corrupted is a big mess, is
there any way to rebuild it without resinstalling all packages (guessed at
from a ls of /usr/share/doc ...)
