By all means, get your gpg key generates and signed by someone there. Meeting a Debian developer in person to get a key signed appears to be the single worst PITA involved so if you've got that out of the way, the rest of the bureaucratic hoops should be smooth sailing. Look at the new maintainers docs on what sort of documentation you need to bring so they can verify your ID. The key fingerprint needs to be presented together with a photo ID or equivalent IIRC.
