devfs isn't a mindless new feature.  It's preparation for the big changes
planned for kernel 3.0, iirc.  (I havent payed attention to kernel dev
for a while, so I can't elaborate.)

Aside from that, an immutable naming scheme for discs is quite attrac-
tive, if you ever add hardware.  It's _useful_ to be able to insert a few
discs _anywhere_ in your IO chain and not affect the naming of other
devices.

In the struggle between usefulness and blind inertia, usefulness wins in
the Linux world.
