Hmm, I've joined this mailing list in the midlle of the conversation, but it's always worked fine on my 7500, with and without a G3 upgrade. I didn't succeed on a Powercenter Pro 180, but it turned out to have a dead battery and started failing to boot up at all just about the time I started trying to install linux on it, so I think the failure is pretty inconclusive.
