this is very strange, you say you have a blue G3?  i have one of these
machines (that is what i am typing this message on) it runs Debian
potato.  quite stable as well..  what kernel are you using?  the one
with the debian boot floppies?  i believe it should be fine.  

i almost suspect hardware problems, but the only other thing i can
think of is a DMA problem, but i have never had any of this trouble on
these machines.  (that is a G4 think isn't it?) 

you are using yaboot to boot the machine right?  BootX will just crash
and crash IME.
