Normally, there should be acceleration enabled for the framebuffer X server. Which fbdev are you using, which mach64 version of the chip are you suing, etc, ... what is the output of fbset -i ? what is the ouptu of xdpyinfo ? what is the output of Xfree when you launch it ? more info is needed to identify your problem, and maybe solve it.
