Just a follow-up -- I commented out snd-powermac in /etc/modules on my
powerbook, and sound still works fine so the /etc/modprobe.d/
mechanism seems to work fine on this system. So maybe alsa or whatever
sound system you are using didn't get fully installed or isn't
compatible with your hardware.
