Package: debian-policy Version: 3.5.6.0 Severity: wishlist Hi everyone.
I hereby propose to add a new virtual package called 'httpd-cgi' to the list of virtual packages in virtual-package-names-list.txt. Reason: There are several packages which depend on (or suggest or whatever) 'httpd'. Some of these packages contain CGI scripts, but not all webservers which provide 'httpd' actually have CGI support. Therefore I suggested on debian-devel to use a new virtual package. After some discussion the consesus was that this virtual package should be called 'httpd-cgi'. Read the threads starting at [1] and [2] for details. If a webserver provides this virtual package (in addition to the usual 'httpd'), one can be sure that it has got CGI support. If all webservers which support CGI provide 'httpd-cgi' in addition to 'httpd', all packages which need CGI support can safely depend on 'httpd-cgi', all those which only need a webserver (and don't care whether it supports CGI or not) can go on depending on 'httpd' (i.e. no changes required). Feel free to merge this with #62996 if desired... P.S. I didn't call this bug [PROPOSAL], because I'm not a DD, yet (still waiting for account creation)...
