Moving the library to a standalone package is probably a good idea if these versions do not diverge too much. Whether it should be a shared library depends on whether upstream can/will commit to proper maintenance standards for shared libraries, including a stable ABI and SONAME bumps. If he doesn't want that, we can still use a shared library in Debian by embedding the word "debian" in the SONAME (libsdl does that). Simon
