I suggest Robin gets in touch with Thanasis to figure this one out, and get a GTK+ 2 build together. It's true that this application has no replacement in Debian, or the free software world more generally.
Also, do you think it would be possible for the Debian Multimedia Team to take over maintenance of the cinepaint package, given that the named maintainer appears to no longer be active?
