Upstream doesn't seem to understand that their "freeware" license is not free: it doesn't give you the right to modify the software and to redistribute modified versions of the software. If they want something less restrictive than the GPL, they should use a 3-clause BSD or Expat license. BTW, your debian/copyright file still states "either version 3 of the License, or (at your option) any later version."
