But probably texlive uses more than xpdf itself?

Currently, between the version of poppler we did support upstream in
TeX Live and 0.12 suddenly 
        pdf_doc->doc->getPDFVersion();
disappeared, and delete r->font does not work anymore [1]. Arggg, of course
it is not much, but it is a willingly created pain. See the history of
poppler pain in [2] where all the patches are hanging around.
