Sure they are. The question is if the teams are willing to
compromise and change.

Yes, this is true. However the problem with that is that
Debian can't manage source, and in particular external
sources. So when you upgrade some parts of your system,
you have to remember to recompile and reinstall those
sources. Whereas if you stick to managed software all of
that should be taken care of -- roughly speaking when you
start using a package manager you're committed to using
it for almost everything almost all the time.
