OpenDental is not "written from scratch" ;) It has a number of users on Windows, and also works on Linux, AFAICT.
But I remember somehow that you considered this as dead end. I admit I don't know any details - so I completely trust your knowledge. If you think you are able to form a Linux community around this project it would sound perfectly reasonable.
